Abstract


Approaches of Literacy Instruction for Mainstreaming Students with Mental Retardation

The purpose of the study was to bring together the approaches that can be used in teaching literacy for mainstreaming students who need special education. It is considered that it is important to bring the approaches together in order to make it easier for people to reach and to provide guidance to teachers. Survey model was used in this research. Literacy approaches that can be used in the field of special education have been compiled based on the literature. The phonics method which is suggested to be used in Turkish curriculum for literacy instruction was explained. Additionally, the three most common approaches, namely combinational, analysis and mixed methods, were explained. The research, in which many methods were described, has become a resource that educators can use or inspire when preparing individualized programs.
