Abstract


THE PERCEPTIONS OF THE SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS INTENDED FOR GEOGRAPHICAL CONCEPTS IN PROVERBS

In this study, the level of perception of 5th grade students in a secondary school about proverbs being an integral part of Turkish culture and climate and landforms being geographical concepts was measured. The proverbs were chosen from the dictionary of Proverbs and Idioms belonged to Turkish Language Institute. Chosen proverbs are determined according to the acquisition of climate and landform subject areas. The instructive, constructive and educational effect of proverbs was paid attention in this choice and if the words have different uses, they are tried to be explained in brackets. Thus, the data collection tool has been prepared and shaped in accordance with the opinions of field experts in terms of content, form and validity. Then the data collection tool consisting of 57 people from the group of 5th grade students was conducted with the pilot scheme. After the pilot scheme, the final data collection tool was rearranged and applied to a total of 205 students in the 5th grade. While 107 students included in a study group study in Istanbul, 98 students included in a study group study in Tokat. As a result of the study, it has been determined that some students have misconceptions about the concepts in the proverbs. An interview was conducted with 10 students selected from these students and tried to explain the reasons of the misconceptions about geographical concepts. As a result of the study, it was understood that students had difficulties in distinguishing the concepts of water-natural disaster-climate elements. However, it has been determined that students also mix the concepts of "nomad tent" and "plain" in landform perception.
